What is surfing?

Surfing is the sport of riding waves in an upright or prone position. Surfers catch ocean, river, or man-made waves, and glide across the surface of the water until the wave breaks and loses its energy.

What are the benefits?

Surfing provides many health benefits including:

  • Cardiovascular fitness—from paddling.
  • Shoulder and back strength—these muscles will strengthen from the paddling.
  • Leg and core strength—once you’re standing up on the board, strong legs and a strong core will keep you up.

What are the requirements to surf?

Surf Buddy
Always surf with at least one other person. Not only will you have more fun if you are sharing your waves, but you’ll always have someone to help you out if you need it.
Surf Conditions
Make sure that the surf is safe before you go in. If you are going surfing at a spot you are unfamiliar with it, is a good idea to get some advice from a local. Check out the surf spot while warming up.
Warm-up
Always have a quick warm-up and stretch before entering the surf. This will reduce the risk of muscle injury or cramp while you’re surfing. It also gives you time to check for any rips or where the best spot to catch waves is.

Do I need a wet suit?

For our surf lessons, a  wetsuit is highly recommended and is provided with your lesson. We recommend wearing a swimsuit underneath the wetsuit and highly recommend you apply sunscreen on your face. Hats and sunglasses are great to bring to the beach, however these will likely come off during surfing, so we recommend you do not wear those out in the water. Pack a towel and change of cloths for afterwards.

How much time will I spend in the water?

We start with a 20 minute land lesson followed by one and half (1.5) hours of water time where we will put it all to practice. The surf land lesson covers water safety, surf etiquette, and instructional surf skills.

Where should I park?

-Village Public Parking is metered street parking available throughout the Village for $1.50 per hour. There is a 3-hour time limit on all parking meters in the Village.

-Beach and Village Upper and Lower Parking Lots behind City Hall offers parking for $0.50 an hour for up to 12 hours. Meters fun from 8am-8pm daily. This lot is about a 5-10min walk down to the Beach.

-Cliff Drive Public Parking  is a longer term paid parking (4-hour and 12-hour) available on Cliff Drive, West of the Village. Parking costs $1.00 per hour.

-During summers there is a free shuttle that runs from the Beach and Village parking lots to Capitola Village. The shuttle is available Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 10am to 8pm Memorial Day weekend through mid-September.

What forms of payment do you accept?
